Samples of food and wine from Savor Cannon Beach

Savor Cannon Beach offers a four-day lineup of unique wine experiences in one of the Pacific Northwests most beautiful vacation destinations. Festival events focus on specific themes that showcase the bounty of Northwest wine and cuisine while restaurants, galleries and shops add a weekend full of tastings, special dinners and cultural events. Many of the wines served at festival events are award winners or wines that have received recent acclaim. Event descriptions from the 2016 festival are listed below.

Make a long weekend of Savor Cannon Beach and enjoy one of the most popular of our festival events: The Thursday Night Throwdown. We've selected one wine from Oregon and one from Washington to represent each of six different varietals and you get to be the judge of what state reigns supreme after you've tasted all 12 wines and vote on your favorite for each varietal. This year, we've mixed it up with some great examples of Northwest Tempranillo, Malbec and Grenache along with three white varietals that we thought would make great match-ups. You'll not only taste 12 great wines, but you're likely to discover some new favorites as you learn about the Northwest's wine regions and varietals. Iron Chef Goes Coastal winner Jonathan Hoffman of Cannon Beach will also prepare some great appetizers to pair with the wines. It's a fun way to kick off the Savor Cannon Beach weekend! Location: Tolovana Inn (Warren/Grace Haven Room, 3400 S.Hemlock).

We've selected some of the Northwest's best examples of Italian red varietals and Rhone white varietals for this fun and educational event presented by Hank and Nancy Sauer. Facilitators of some of the largest wine competitions in the Northwest, the Sauers are always popular presenters and they will offer an entertaining guided tasting where you will learn about some of these lesser known wine varietals. Some of the wines you will taste include Locati Cellars Barbera recently awarded Best of Class at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and Walla Walla Vintners' Sangiovese, a double gold medal winner at the Great Northwest Wine Competition. Rhone whites will include Viognier, Rousanne and a Double Gold medal winning Rhone blend, Pistoleta from Quady North in Southern Oregon. Location: Tolovana Inn (Warren/Grace Haven Room, 3400 S Hemlock).

Taste a special selection of three wines from five different winemakers as small groups of five rotate between five Winemaker Tables for intimate small-group tastings of library, reserve, horizontal or vertical wine flights. In this session, you'll taste a vertical (2010-2012) of Tertulia Cellars Estate Excelsior, a Walla Walla-style Bordeaux blend; a library vertical of Sangiovese from Locati Cellars; a three-year vertical (2009- 2011) of Northwest Cellars Intrigue red blend; a 2013 horizontal of vineyard specific Pinot Noir from Fullerton Wines; and select wines from D'Anu including their 2012 Winemakers Reserve Pinot Noir and 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a rare opportunity to taste 15 special wines and hear about Northwest wine terroir and the winemaking process. The session is limited to only 25 participants. It's our version of speed dating some of the best of Northwest wines! Location: Cannon Beach Community Hall (207 N Spruce St).

Experience the winemaker's art of blending wines at the Battle of the Blends, an event that showcases some of the Northwest's best wine blends in a fun evening of wine tasting combined with the culinary concoctions of Cannon Beach chefs. You'll taste eight great wines we've carefully selected to represent different varietal blends and showcase the Northwest's wine regions, then youll vote on your favorites to choose the winners of the Battle of the Blends. Youll also sample the offerings of Cannon Beach chefs who we challenged to create the perfect bite and you choose your favorite in the Battle of the Bites. Location: Tolovana Inn (Warren/Grace Haven Room, 3400 S Hemlock).
